Advancing Inclusive Research Culture at a Research-Intensive UK University

A research-intensive UK university’s Computer Science Department commissioned Bakare Barley Ltd to deliver targeted training to strengthen their commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI). The initiative was designed to support staff in navigating real-life scenarios related to diversity and inclusion and to foster a more conscious, inclusive research culture.

Focusing on equity and inclusion

The department recognised that in order to lead in innovative research and teaching, they must ensure that their environment is inclusive, respectful and supportive of everyone. Developing confidence in handling EDI-related situations was seen as essential to maintaining a culture where all colleagues feel valued, respected, and able to thrive.

The workshops were tailored to address the department’s specific needs, ensuring that participants could reflect on their own practices, share experiences, and explore practical approaches to building inclusive behaviours in academic and research settings.

What we did

Bakare Barley Ltd worked in partnership with the university to co-design and deliver:

The facilitated sessions provided a safe space for staff to explore key themes, discuss challenges, and develop practical strategies to embed inclusion in their daily work.

The outcome

Staff gained greater awareness of how EDI principles can be applied in academic and research contexts, as well as practical tools for managing challenging situations. The workshops strengthened collective responsibility for building an inclusive culture within the department and reinforced the University’s wider commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

Through ongoing evaluation, UoY will continue to refine its approach, ensuring that inclusive practice remains central to its research culture and academic excellence.
